What Is Old Is New Again
When I first started working in video games I was working on MMO’s and Virtual Worlds. At the time 3D Virtual Worlds was really too early to take off. There was some limited success globally but not enough for it really to go mainstream. Too soon.
At GDC this year I saw a number of cool virtual reality demos. Everyone was like “wow look you are standing in a bar. Here you can play a jukebox and pick the music you listen to. Look an Arcade machine you can play.” I felt I had been transplanted 10 years into the past. I started asking questions about things we had done in virtual worlds and they were like “No we hadn’t thought of that. That’s a great idea.” It was then that I realized there truly are no new ideas just redressed ones.
I’m excited that Virtual Reality is becoming a big thing but amused that the New “New” is the Old “New”.
Virtual Reality Developers Conference
At last year’s GDC in San Francisco the showings of Virtual Reality and talks about VR were hot. Every room was filled to capacity and the lines to try out VR demos were long. With next year being the commercial release for a lot of products in the VR space it is not surprising that GDC is adding its own dedicated Virtual Reality Developers Conference to the GDC line up. Right now my guess it is a glorified summit like they do every year for tracks like Independent games and serious gaming but who knows maybe it will be a whole lot more. I am hoping so.
Pro Tip: Gear Vr
Though the GearVR works with Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge make sure the phone you have is in a region that can download the GearVR app otherwise you will need to check the model of your phone and flash rom to a region that does. Developing in unsupported countries is a pain in the ass. Next time buying both phone and GearVR from same location.
Chris Milk Ted Talk on VR
If you haven’t seen Chris Milk’s Ted Talk on VR from March 2015 you should. The link is right below so check it out.
Back Again
Hello. If anyone is still out there I am back again. Been a busy year and a half working on mobile sports games, card battle games and match 3 games. I’m about to endeavor into one of my favorite spaces in technology and game design Virtual Reality (VR). Decided to dust off the blog and post about my discoveries and research on the subject. Still will post some on management and design but the primary focus going forward for a bit is VR. A lot of this will be for reference for myself but I hope what I find is helpful for you too.
